Support the Mission of Immerse International through our Year-end Campaign

Here’s just one story of a life impacted by the opportunities found at Immerse:

“Immerse International became more than just a place to live. It was where I learned independence, resilience, and the joy of multicultural friendships. It gave me a safe and supportive space to grow at a time when I was most vulnerable.” - Thiena, alumnus

  • When I arrived at Immerse International in Millersville, I was just 17 years old. My journey to America had been unexpected and unprepared. I had to come earlier than planned because of a travel ban on my home country, Burundi. At that age, I found myself far away from family, in a new culture, and with little idea of how to begin this new chapter. I didn’t know how to cook, how to manage daily life on my own, or even how to fully navigate my new surroundings in America.

At first, I felt out of place. I was the only minor living in the house, surrounded by adults who all seemed more experienced and settled than I was. But instead of being left behind, I was embraced. The people at Immerse became a family to me. They taught me the basics: how to cook my meals, how to take care of myself, and how to approach challenges with confidence. They gave me advice when I didn’t know what to do, and they even drove me to church so that I could feel spiritually grounded in this new environment.

At the same time, I was learning English at the academic center. What I found most valuable wasn’t just the classes, it was the community. I met people from many different cultures and backgrounds, and together we formed friendships that taught me as much about the world as they did about myself.

Immerse International became more than just a place to live. It was where I learned independence, resilience, and the joy of multicultural friendships. It gave me a safe and supportive space to grow at a time when I was most vulnerable.

Looking back, I see how important Immerse was in shaping the beginning of my life in America. Without it, I would have faced those first months alone and unprepared. Instead, I was surrounded by kindness, guidance, warmth, and a true sense of community. For me, Immerse wasn’t just housing, it was my home.

Thank you for considering how you might support Immerse International. Your gift has a direct impact on the life of an international neighbor and our local community.
